The Mask and the Crown

The ballroom was a cathedral of shadows and splendor, its marble floors veined with gold, chandeliers glowing with cold, unnatural flame. Vireya stood at the edge, draped in blood-red silk, her blade hidden in the folds of her skirts.

She didn’t need to look for him. She felt him.

Kaelen’s presence was like deadly frost threading up her spine—controlled, chilling, but somehow intimate. He stood at the top of the stairs, dark-cloaked and crowned, watching her through a mask of silver bone. Then he began to descend, and she felt smaller and smaller.

Get together, Vir.

“You shouldn’t be here,” he said when they finally stood almost face to face beneath the arch of bone-carved roses.”

“And yet, here I am,” she replied coolly. “Your court invited me.”

“I didn’t.”

She tilted her head. “Afraid of what I might do?”

He stepped closer, his powerful bone magic curling with his shadow at his boots. “No. Afraid of what I might want.”

The words should have chilled her. Instead, they burned.

One step closer. Her dagger blade pressed against his ribs. One simple move. And then his magic coiled at her throat.

“This can’t end well,” she whispered.

“No,” Kaelen murmured, lowering his mouth to her ear. “But all dead gods' blessings, won’t these cold, lifeless walls be beautiful, painted with our blood?”

Worldbuilding

Welcome to Veyrith

A land divided by blood and bone, magic and war. Centuries ago, the gods died in a cataclysm called The Sundering, leaving behind fractured realms, cursed bloodlines, and twisted remnants of old power.

  • The Crimson Court: Immortal assassins ruling volcanic Aethern Vale, masters of Veilcraft—shadow and illusion magic fueled by blood. Love is a liability; power is everything.
  • The Hollow Throne: The Hollowborn rule Nytheris, a mist-laden empire carved into god-beast bones. Their Hollowbind magic manipulates memory and commands the dead, but every use erodes their soul.
  • The Whispering Wilds: A sentient, time-warped forest where nature and old gods linger. Wildcraft magic here is primal and unpredictable, fueled by emotion and intent.

Magic Systems:

  • Bloodborn Magic: Ancient pacts with dead gods, requiring blood sacrifice. Powers include shadow control, illusions, and memory theft—but overuse leads to madness ("Bleed").
  • Hollowbind Magic: Unique to the Hollowborn, tied to ancestral bones. Grants control over others and the dead, but at the cost of the user's soul and sanity.
  • Wildcraft: Primal, fey-like magic found only in the Wilds. Fueled by pure emotion, it cannot be controlled—only answered.

Prophecy & Curses: Both Kaelen and Vireya are entwined in the Boneflower Vow. Their union could end the Hollowborn curse—or bring back the dead gods in a tide of ruin.

The Boneflower Prophecy

“When a child of blood and bone joins hands with fire and frost, the gods will rise again—or be forgotten forever.”

Religion & Myth: The Sundering shattered the divine balance. Shrines to the Three Lost Gods—Elarion (love/life), Noctarion (death/memory), and Vexira (desire/war)—still linger, promising power or madness to those who seek them.
